The things we will not trade away
One planner throughout
The person who answers your first email writes your itinerary, briefs your guides and is still on the other end of the phone in Jodhpur.
We’ve slept there
Every hotel, camp and houseboat we sell has been inspected by someone on this team within the last eighteen months. Rooms change hands. Standards slip. We check.
Fewer places, longer
Three nights beats two almost everywhere. We would rather cut Jaipur than have you see it through a windscreen at four in the afternoon, tired and behind schedule.
Guides, not commentators
We work with about ninety guides across five countries and we know them by name. Art historians, birders, a retired forest officer in Kanha. Nobody is assigned at random.
Honest about difficulty
Some roads take nine hours. Some temples are loud and crowded and worth it anyway. We tell you before you book, not in the arrival briefing.
Money where it lands
We pay guides and drivers above the local rate, in full, on time, and we tell you what proportion of your trip cost stays in the district you visit.
Accreditation
Bonded, insured and answerable to somebody
Inbound operators in India are licensed by the Ministry of Tourism and most belong to one or more trade bodies. It is worth checking that whoever you book with does.

What travellers say afterwards
The bit I still talk about wasn’t the fort. It was Devendra pulling over on the Bundi road at dusk so we could watch a flock cross, then knowing the shepherd well enough that we were handed tea in a steel tumbler. You cannot book that. Someone has to know the road.
Four drives, no tiger. On the fifth our naturalist Pankaj stopped the jeep and made us listen to langur alarm calls moving through the sal for twenty minutes before anything appeared. I have been on safaris where they just chase the radio. This felt like being taught something.
Tripfizz put an extra night into Phobjikha and I sulked about it for a week. Then we spent a morning in the crane centre with a monk who counts them, and the whole valley made sense. They were right and I was wrong. Also the driver, Sonam, never once used his horn.
My husband is coeliac and I had braced for two weeks of plain rice. Instead the office sent a note ahead to every kitchen; in Thekkady the cook came out to explain which of the sides used asafoetida. Small thing. It changed the whole holiday for him.
Our flight to Pokhara was cancelled at 6am for cloud. By seven, Sunita in Delhi had a car, a driver and a rebooked lunch in Bandipur, and had already told the lodge. I did not have to solve a single thing. That is what I paid for, in the end.
We asked for one afternoon with no plan at all. In Kandy that turned into three hours in the Halloluwa market with our guide Nishantha, buying jackfruit we could not possibly eat. Nobody hurried us to the temple. The itinerary was written to allow for that, which surprised me.
