Arrival in Kathmandu

You land at Tribhuvan International and are met in the arrivals hall for the short drive to Lazimpat. Nothing is scheduled. If you have energy, the Garden of Dreams is ten minutes away: neoclassical pavilions, a walled lawn, and the only genuinely quiet corner in central Kathmandu. Dinner at the hotel, and an early night.

Valley Prelude

One full day in the valley before the plains. Swayambhunath at eight, then Patan Durbar Square and its museum, which explains the iconography you will keep seeing. Lunch in a Newar courtyard restaurant off Mangal Bazaar. Late afternoon at Boudhanath for the kora, walking clockwise with the crowd as the butter lamps are lit.

Down to the Terai

A 25-minute flight to Bharatpur, then half an hour by road to the lodge on the park’s western boundary. Lunch, a briefing, and out by four: the floodplain grassland along the Rapti, where rhino come to feed as the heat goes out of the day. Sambar bark in the sal edge. Back before dark.

Rapti Mornings

Out at 6.15 in an open jeep, mist still on the grass. Chitwan holds around 700 rhino; you rarely go a morning without one. Look also for gaur at the forest edge, and the Bengal florican displaying over the phanta in spring. Afternoon: a canoe on the Rapti past basking gharial, then a walk with an armed naturalist.

Grassland and Gharial

A longer drive today, east towards Kasara and the Gharial Breeding Centre, where hatchlings are reared before release into the Narayani. Picnic breakfast on a river bar. The birding here is excellent: lesser adjutant, ruddy shelduck in winter, and the Indian pitta calling from the undergrowth in April. Evening in a Tharu village, mud-relief walls, dhikri steamed in leaves.

Lumbini

West to the Birthplace

Four and a half hours west along the Mahendra Highway, through Butwal and out into the sugarcane. Lumbini in the afternoon: the Maya Devi temple over the marker stone, Ashoka’s pillar of 249 BC still standing, and the Bodhi tree hung with prayer flags. Walk the Monastic Zone at dusk, Myanmar, Korea, Germany, each in its own idiom.

The Long Road West

The drive to Bardiya takes most of the day, around six hours, with a stop at Ghorahi for lunch. It is worth every kilometre. The lodge sits at Thakurdwara on the park boundary, thatched, unfussy, run by people who have been counting these tigers for decades. Orientation walk along the Khauraha channel before dinner.

Waiting at the Waterhole

Bardiya rewards patience rather than mileage. You will spend hours on a machan above a waterhole, or sitting quietly on the Khauraha riverbank while langur alarm calls move through the sal. Around 125 tigers use this park. Sightings are not guaranteed and we will not pretend otherwise, but the odds here are the best in Nepal.

Karnali and the Dolphins

A full day on the Karnali’s western branch, looking for Gangetic river dolphin. Perhaps six remain in this stretch, surfacing with a soft exhalation you hear before you see. Gharial haul out on the sand; smooth-coated otter fish the shallows. Afternoon for the Tharu villages at Dalla, and a stick dance after dinner.

Nepalgunj & Kathmandu

Out via Nepalgunj

One last drive at first light, in case the road gives you something. Bardiya’s tigers are known to cross it. Then two and a half hours to Nepalgunj and the afternoon flight to Kathmandu, an hour with the Himalaya along the whole northern window. Evening free in Thamel for last purchases: pashmina, Mustang salt, Ilam tea.

Departure

A slow morning. Checkout is at noon, and the hotel garden is a good place to sort photographs. If there is time, Asan Tole’s spice market is fifteen minutes by taxi and smells of asafoetida and dried fish. Transfer to Tribhuvan International three hours before your flight, and home.
