Colombo

Arrival in Colombo

You land at Bandaranaike, clear immigration and meet your chauffeur-guide beyond the barrier; the drive south takes about an hour. Nothing is scheduled. If you have slept on the plane, walk Galle Face Green at six when the isso wade sellers set up and the kite strings go taut, then eat crab curry at Ministry of Crab.

Dambulla

North to the Cave Temples

Out of the city by nine, north through Kurunegala where the roadside stalls sell king coconut and cashews roasted in the shell. Dambulla’s five caves sit under an overhang of granite: 153 Buddhas, ceilings painted to the rock’s own contour, and a slow drip that has fed the same water pot for centuries. Late afternoon light is best. Bare feet on hot stone, so bring socks.

Polonnaruwa & Sigiriya

Polonnaruwa by Bicycle

Bicycles at the ticket office, and the ruined capital opens up over four flat kilometres of shade: the Vatadage’s guardstones, the brick vault of Lankatilaka, and the Gal Vihara Buddhas cut from a single granite ledge, the reclining figure fourteen metres of it. Toque macaques patrol the lawns. Afternoon transfer to Sigiriya, an hour down the road, and a swim before dinner.

Sigiriya

Sigiriya at First Light

Gates open at seven; be first on the stair. Twelve hundred steps up the western face, past the mirror wall and the apsara frescoes in their sheltered pocket, to the lion’s paws and then the summit palace with its cisterns cut into rock. Down by ten, before the heat. Late afternoon in Minneriya or Kaudulla, where the herds come to the drying tank for grass.

Kandy

Down to Kandy and the Tooth Relic

Three hours south, with a stop at a Matale spice garden to see pepper vines and the cinnamon peeler’s knife work. Kandy sits in a bowl of hills around its lake. At half past six the hevisi drummers start and the doors of the inner chamber open for a few minutes; the relic itself stays in its caskets. Dress covers shoulders and knees.

Nuwara Eliya

The Hill Line to Tea Country

Peradeniya’s gardens first, for the avenue of royal palms and the Javan fig that shades half an acre on its own. Then the 12.30 from Kandy: reserved seats, windows down, four hours of terraced tea and eucalyptus to Nanu Oya. Your car meets the train. Nuwara Eliya is 1,890 metres up and genuinely cold after dark, so a fire is laid in the room.

Yala

Horton Plains, then South to Yala

Leave at half five for Horton Plains, because the cloud closes in by nine. The loop is nine kilometres across montane grassland to World’s End, a sheer 870-metre drop, then back past Baker’s Falls. Listen for the whistling thrush. Breakfast on the tailgate, then a long descent through Haputale and Wellawaya to the dry zone, arriving at Yala for dinner.

Yala

Yala Block One

Two drives, both at the edges of the day. Block One holds the densest leopard population measured anywhere; the trick is patience at a waterhole rather than chasing radio calls. Sloth bear in the palu fruiting season, mugger crocodiles on the bunds, painted storks, and elephants that ignore the jeep entirely. Between drives, sleep through the middle of the day. It is hot.

Galle

The Coast Road to Galle Fort

West along the coast: Tissamaharama’s tank at first light if you want waders, then Tangalle, and the stilt fishermen at Koggala who will pose for a fee and are honest about it. Galle’s ramparts are Dutch, laid in 1663 over Portuguese work. Walk them at six when the whole town does, out to the lighthouse, and let the sea breeze do the rest.

Galle Fort, then Departure

A last morning inside the walls: the Dutch Reformed Church floor of gravestones, the lace makers on Pedlar Street, a lime soda at Pedlar’s Inn. Then the southern expressway to Bandaranaike, roughly two and a half hours, for your flight home. If your departure is late, we hold the room until three so you can swim and shower first.
