Delhi

Arrival in Delhi

You land at Terminal 3, are met before the immigration queue by our representative, and are in bed within the hour if you want to be. For those who arrive in daylight, the Sunder Nursery next to Humayun’s Tomb is a fifteen-minute drive: ninety acres of restored Mughal garden, rose-ringed parakeets, and a decent coffee at the entrance pavilion.

Delhi

Krishna on paper and in stone

A morning in the National Museum with an art historian: the Kangra and Basohli miniatures, where Krishna waits in monsoon rain painted with crushed lapis; then the Harappan dancing girl, which everyone stops for. Afternoon free. In the evening, a private recital of dhrupad — the older, slower vocal form still sung in the Braj temples — at a musician’s home in Nizamuddin.

Mathura

South to the birthplace

Three and a half hours down the Yamuna Expressway to Mathura. Security at the Krishna Janmabhoomi is airport-strict: no phones, no bags, no leather, so leave everything in the car. The garbha griha is a cell no bigger than a pantry. At sunset, Vishram Ghat, where the aarti is small, local, and conducted for about forty people.

Vrindavan

The temples keep Krishna’s hours

Vrindavan runs on the god’s timetable: temples shut at midday because he is asleep. You start at Radha Raman for the dawn shringar aarti, where the deity is self-manifest and the Sanskrit is sung rather than chanted. Then Banke Bihari, where the curtain is drawn every few minutes so no one is held too long by the gaze.

Vrindavan

Groves, widows and white marble

The sixteenth-century Govind Dev, built in red sandstone by Raja Man Singh and half-demolished by Aurangzeb, still holds its Gothic-looking vault. Nidhivan is a tangle of low tulsi trees no one enters after dark. In the afternoon, a visit to a widows’ ashram at Chaitanya Vihar, where the singing runs eight hours a day, and Prem Mandir after sunset when it is lit.

Barsana

Radha’s hill, Krishna’s village

Forty-five minutes west to Barsana, Radha’s village, where the Ladli Ji temple sits above two hundred steps cut into Bhanugarh hill — palanquins are available and no one will think less of you. Across the fields at Nandgaon, the temple of Krishna’s foster father is quieter. Peacocks everywhere; in March this is where the lathmar Holi is played.

Govardhan

Around the hill at Govardhan

The Govardhan parikrama is twenty-one kilometres and traditionally done barefoot. You will walk a chosen five, from Radha Kund to Kusum Sarovar, on the shaded inner path, with a vehicle shadowing you. Radha Kund at dawn has monkeys, mud and immense feeling. Afterwards, sweet lassi at Daan Ghati and back to Vrindavan for the afternoon.

Agra

Down to the Mughal city

An hour and a half to Agra. Begin away from the crowd at Itmad-ud-Daulah, the small tomb of white marble inlaid with cornelian and jasper that the Taj later borrowed from. Late afternoon at Mehtab Bagh across the river, where the Taj shows its back and the sandbanks fill with black-winged stilts and a few skimmers.

Agra

The Taj at first light

Gates open at sunrise; you are through them at ten past six, before the coaches. Ninety minutes with an architectural historian, then breakfast back at the hotel. Agra Fort afterwards, and the octagonal tower where Shah Jahan spent his last eight years looking downstream. Evening: a marble inlay workshop where a single hand-cut flower takes four days.

Delhi

Departure from Delhi

Breakfast, then the Gatimaan Express or the expressway back to Delhi — under three hours either way. Depending on your flight, we can hold a day room near the airport, or fill the afternoon with the Crafts Museum in Pragati Maidan. Transfer to Terminal 3 for your international departure. This is the final day of the journey.
