North Malé Atoll

Velana, then the Speedboat North

You clear immigration at Velana, cross the wooden jetty and step onto a speedboat; twenty-five minutes over water that shifts from indigo to a flat pale green as the reef comes up. Check-in is a cold towel and a chart of the house reef. Snorkel the western drop-off before six, parrotfish grazing coral and blacktip reef sharks in the shallows.

North Malé Atoll

House Reef and Banana Reef

The house reef is the point of a North Malé island: fifteen strokes from the sand and the shelf falls away sixteen metres. Two guided dives if you are certified, Banana Reef in the morning for its overhangs and schooling snapper. Otherwise a dhoni out at five, mask in hand, then dinner of reef fish grilled with lime and curry leaf.

South Ari Atoll

Seaplane South to Ari Atoll

The transfer is the sightseeing. A Twin Otter on floats, barefoot pilots, and twenty-five minutes at 1,500 feet over the whole geometry of the atolls: reef rings, blue holes, a sandbank that is there only at low tide. South Ari by noon. The rest of the day is the overwater villa, ladder down, water at twenty-nine degrees.

Whale Sharks and a Sandbank Lunch

South Ari holds juvenile whale sharks year round along the outer reef off Maamigili and Dhigurah. Out at seven with a marine biologist, six swimmers in the water at a time, no touching and no boat crowding. Then a sandbank an hour away: no shade, no jetty, a cool box and a mat, and manta rays cleaning on the reef at four.

Malé

Last Swim, then Departure

One more hour on the house reef at first light, when the trevally hunt along the drop-off and the water is still glass. Bags go ahead. The seaplane leaves mid-morning for Velana; if your flight is late we hold a day room, and a driver can take you across to Malé for the fish market and the coral-stone Hukuru Miskiy.
