What we do
India’s grand trains are not one thing. The Maharajas’ Express runs a set route between Delhi and Mumbai with a wine list and a butler to each cabin; the Nilgiri Mountain Railway climbs from Mettupalayam to Coonoor at walking pace, rack under the wheels, doors open. Between those extremes sit the useful trains — the Kalka–Shimla narrow gauge through 102 tunnels, the Vistadome coach down the Konkan coast in June rain, an overnight first-class berth that saves a day of driving. We book the luxury departures a year out, choose cabins away from the generator car, and put a Tripfizz manager on board for the whole route.
